This is a nice story of Jean Morlet, an engineer, and Alex Grossman, a physicist, who are pioneers in wavelet. It contains the intrinsic idea of wavelet which was come up when Morlet had to resolve a realistic problem.

Here is the link: http://www.gvsu.edu/math/wavelets/student_work/Kieft/Morlet-Grossman%20Page.html

For students: A detailed Introduction to Wavelets by Amara Graps is available in several formats, including HTML, a PDF and in postscript. Located at: http://www.amara.com/IEEEwave/IEEEwavelet.html
Very helpful for new or inexperienced DSP students.
